Meta Tags

Meta tags, officially known as "Metadata Elements", are information added at the top of the html web page which is the "head" area (Kaurin and Dragić, 2012).  They are codes that provides information to the search engines on how it is to be displayed in the search results and to the users. Additionally, it is also only visible in the html code (Hardwick, 2020). 

It is mainly used in SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and contains six most significant tags which are meta title, meta description, meta robots, meta refresh redirect, meta charset and meta viewport (Hardwick, 2020).

Meta Title

It is a tag that contains the main title of the webpage with keywords that search engines will use to provide information to the visitors (Hardwick, 2020).

Meta Description

It is a tag that contains the brief summarization content of what the whole webpage is all about which also contains keywords that tells the visitor exactly what they're searching for (Hardwick, 2020).

Meta Viewport

This tag sets the size of the area of the webpage. It informs the browser on how the webpage will be projected on screen in devices such as mobile phones, laptops and tablets (Hardwick, 2020).

Meta Charset

This tag allows the author to input how the text or characters of the webpage should be displayed on screen. The most commonly used in the web are UTF-8 and ISO-8859-1 (Hardwick, 2020).

Meta Refresh Redirect

It is not necessarily needed to add this tag as it will cause some issues such as confusing the users and not being supported by all browsers. Its function is to tell the browser to redirect the user to another webpage or URL after a certain amount of time (Hardwick, 2020).
